The race calendar is slim at this time of year, but two races are available for those who want to start off the year tomorrow on a competitive note.
Tupelo High School senior Stefan Russell has teamed up with the Tupelo Running Club to present the New Years Day 5K as the community service portion of his senior project. The entry fee is $20 and proceeds for the race will be given to the Regional Rehab Center, tying in with the topic of Russell’s project, ‘Prevention of Injuries on Teenage Athletes.’ Race time is at 10:00 a.m., with registration beginning at 9:00 a.m., at the back part of Ballard Park near Dudies Diner. Online registration is available here. Participants can enjoy New Year’s Day snacks after the race.
In Hattiesburg, the year kicks off with the annual Steam Whistle 12K, at the Jackson Road Station/Longleaf Trail, sponsored by the Pine Belt Pacers. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and race time is 9:00 a.m. Cost is $25, with proceeds going to the education/nature classroom at the Denbury Beaver Pond on the Longleaf Trail. Cabbage, cornbread, and black-eyed peas will be served after the race.
Halloween weekend opens with the Haunted Trail 5K in Tupelo, starting and finishing in Ballard Park. With a midnight race time on Friday night, it’s sure to offer runners something a little different. Note that there is no race-night registration and the participation is limited to the first 300 to register. As of Friday morning,abuot 85 spots remained. The registration fee is $25.
The weekend’s remaining races are all scheduled for Saturday.
Clinton will keep with the Halloween theme with the Olde Towne Pumpkin Run 5K Run and Walk, starting at the Baptist Healthplex. Race day registration is $30 and begins at 7:00 a.m. The Run kicks off at 8:00 a.m., with the Walk following at 8:15 a.m.

The Queen City Race for Life 5K, 1 Mile and High Heel Dash was held in Dumont Plaza in downtown Meridian with perfect weather Saturday, October 2. The Event enjoyed 258 total participants (250 was our goal) and benefited Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Cindy Kane was the race organizer, Tim Irvine (Bonita Running Club) was the Race Director, and the race featured “Bib-Chip” Timing from Mississippi Race Timing. The course featured a double loop through downtown Meridian and was manned by Meridian Community College’s Baseball Team volunteers. MCC sent volunteers from tennis and softball as well and were awesome to work with.

The 30th Great Bude Run will begin at 8 a.m. at the Franklin Telephone Company, with three courses: 5K Run; 1 Mile Fun Run for ages 14 and under; and a 1 Mile Walker’s Mile for ages 15 and older. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. and is $10 for the 5K Run and Walker’s Mile, and $8 for the Fun Run.
